Where is your New York refund?
Your refund-status screen shows the current processing stage of your return. You may have Form IT-201 or IT-203 open while comparing the requested refund with the deposit you expected.
The common assumption is that an accepted return has also been approved for payment. It has not.
Your next decision is whether to wait, correct the information you entered, or respond to a department letter.
Use the official Check Your Refund Status application from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, the state agency that administers New York taxes. The message changes when the return enters a different stage.
It does not refresh at a fixed time each day. First, confirm that you are tracking the correct tax.
Which tax refund are you tracking?
You must track New York State and federal tax refunds separately. The department application covers an income tax refund, including calculations reported on resident, part-year resident, or nonresident returns.
The IRS provides its own tool for a federal refund.
New York City resident tax and Yonkers tax may appear within the filing calculation, but neither has a separate NYC refund tracker. A payment is also different from a refund.
The status application cannot confirm that a payment reached your account. Check payment activity with your financial institution or Online Services.
Next, identify the return that generated the expected result.
Which return should you use?
Use the exact filed return for the relevant tax year. A full-year resident generally files Form IT-201.
A part-year resident or nonresident generally files Form IT-203. Estates and trusts can use Form IT-205.
The residency rule is the catch when someone moved during the tax year or maintained a home in NYC.
The refund application requires figures from the return actually submitted, not an estimate from a pay stub or tax-software preview. If a preparer submitted the return, request a copy from that preparer.
If you used software, sign in and download the final accepted version. An amended return follows a different status-check process: call 518-457-5149.
Next, use the filed document to check the record.
How do you check the status?
Check the refund by entering the requested identity details and the exact requested amount in the official application. Review the Social Security number before submitting.
After four unsuccessful attempts with mismatched information, access is blocked for 24 hours.
You can also call the automated refund line at 518-457-5149. According to the department, the online tool, automated phone system, and Call Center representatives receive the same status updates.
Repeated calls therefore may not provide a newer result. If the check fails, verify the figure before trying again.
Where is the requested refund amount?
The requested refund amount appears on a specific line of the filed form. For tax year 2025, the department lists Line 78 for Form IT-201, Line 68 for Form IT-203, Line 39 for Form IT-205, and Line 20 for Form IT-214.
Check the official refund page for the line applicable to another tax year.
Example: Assume a single filer who was a full-year New York State resident and lived in Albany submitted a tax year 2025 IT-201 showing $1,240 on Line 78. That filer enters $1,240, even if the software earlier estimated $1,300.
Contrast that with a single filer who moved out of New York City during the year, filed as a part-year resident on IT-203, and requested $860 on Line 68. That filer enters $860.
If the applicable line is blank or zero, no refund was requested through that return. The filed amount controls the next step.
What information do status messages provide?
A refund message identifies the processing stage or tells you that additional information is required. A simple return can move faster than one involving credits, inconsistent withholding, or identity checks.
The department does not promise one standard processing period for all returns.
If the message says a letter was sent, follow the letter’s deadline and proof checklist. The department says responses to information requests are usually reviewed within 90 days and can take up to 120 days during peak periods.
In practical terms, the return may be in routine processing, under additional review, or awaiting your response to correspondence. Changes to the claimed figures can also affect the result.
Why might the refund show a new amount?
A new refund amount may reflect corrected math, an ineligible credit, a debt offset, or another account adjustment. Compare the notice with the original return before assuming the difference is a bank error.
The department’s refund guidance explains common adjustments and links to response options.
A New York State adjustment does not automatically change the federal refund, although some refunds could matter on a later federal tax return. Neither Congress nor the IRS controls the processing of this payment.
Review the notice, the applicable law, and any requested documentation before disputing a change. Use the department’s stated verification channel for the final decision.
What should you do about the state status now?
Act according to the displayed message: wait during ordinary processing, correct mismatched entries, or respond when the department requests proof. If a paper check was issued but did not arrive, use the department’s replacement-check guidance.
If you selected direct deposit, verify the routing and account details shown on the filed return.

Return to the official refund-status application, select the correct tax year, and enter the Social Security number and requested refund amount from the filed form.
Takeaway: Match the status entry to the final return, then follow the exact instruction displayed by the department.
